The key and most profound question each business owner should be able to answer with
much clarity before embarking on a Coaching journey is defining their vision. It is
recommendable that the vision is written down and made plane for anyone to
understand.
One of my favourite authors Anne Scoular, in her book Business Coaching, asserts
that ‘Good business coaching is so powerful that if it was a drug, it would
be illegal’ . That’s typically our aim to offer a substantially robust
service and life transforming experience to our clients.
Business Coaching continues to grow and becoming an increasingly popular trend. Business Coaching takes a different landscape as the world diversifies its view to different approaches and embarks on developmental journeys attained through emerging research.
We define a Business Coach as an individual with business expertise, an entrepreneur or an executive with many years of experience. What these individuals have in common is the experience and knowledge to strategically develop, accelerate a business to reach a specific goal and height. It is worth noting that Business Coaching is a collaborative relationship between the Coach and the Coachee, also considering that coaching is related primarily to performance improvement on a short term basis. Therefore, the goals, or intermediate or sub-goals are set with the Coach. The learner, also known as the ‘Coachee’ has in essence ownership of the GOAL, whilst the COACH has in essence ownership of the PROCESS.
There are various reasons and circumstances that lead individuals or companies to seek for Business Coaching Services. I have seen a rise in new businesses taking up such offers, where anxiety and crippling of fear due to the changing global economy and rising of new competitors as well as advancement in technology being a threat to most new businesses.
Having said that Business Coaching is not only concentrated on new businesses. Businesses that have been running for many years can also require these services, it has been interesting to observe the variety of needs from different individuals and the plethora of sectors they come from. So apart from new and existing businesses, there has been a rise in Group Coaching for those businesses seeking support with various specs of their Teams, especially their Leadership.
In a nutshell Business Coaching is most suitable for those desiring to advance themselves and their companies.
It is important to have the realization as a Business Coach that individuals and organizations are unique and they differ. Therefore, the approach and methodologies applied may not necessarily be prescriptive and be the same for all.
It is common for the process of Coaching to sometime dip into Mentoring as there are shared cross overs between the Coaching and Mentoring. Both will encompass the following;
In essence Coaches provides invaluable space for personal development and can help identify and solve problems, set direction, provide guidance and perspective using different coaching tools. An integral part of Business Coaching is creating accountability, it is essential for the Coachee to understand that they have to consistently maintain accountability and keep their gaze on achieving their goals. Coaches cannot run the business for you, or take care of its day to day running, however can challenge, motivate and serve as a sounding board. Coaches will be able to identify a mote in one’s eye or other oversights.
Our Business Coaches will use a plethora of tools and methodologies to enable the process of Coaching to manifest the intended goals. Further on, the Coaching journey will be measurable and traceable through the use of Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s), so these allow visibility and transparency of each stage of the Coaching journey. Using such tools can motivate the Coachee to align with their Coaching contract, avoid lacking intrinsic motivation and be accountable.
Our Business Coach will not just set you goals and leave you alone to achieve them, however, they will help you to set achieve tasks within a reasonable and agreed timelines, they will set strategise and action plans. They will support each stage of your transition and the process to do so.
Building a genuine Coaching relationship is equally essential as part of the process of Coaching as this will in turn promote trust and autonomy, also cultivating grounds for the Coachee to be their authentic self in their engagement.
The Coach can support the Coachee to apply strategic critical thinking and help them with reflexivity. Furthermore, the our Coach will facilitate a platform for the Coachee to learn and grow in their decision making, overcoming obstacles and implementing changes. The list is endless, also can include helping the Coachee to gain clarity in their thought process and commitment, and identify and change their limiting beliefs.
A starting point for the Business Coach is learning everything about the Coachee’s business or brand, this can include but not limited to the customer base, value proposition, past and current frameworks, challenges faced, leadership and business structures, systems and so forth.
Next, the Business Coach will want to learn about your vision and the goals you have for that particular business. In my many years of experience I have seen the role of the Coach enabling especially new business owners to explore self-efficacy as this is directly linked to their beliefs and capacity to execute behaviours necessary to produce specific performance attainment.
Therefore, Coachees settlement of their emotions can be directly linked to bias and or thinking differently about their role, responsibilities and so forth. A balanced, curated and exercised mind can achieve much.
Coaching will enable new insight to a Coachee, especially to do with Time, Pressure and Constraints of Decision Making. In the hectic business world the thing called THINKING is not given the recognition it deserves, meaning hardly any time is allocated for this principal phenomenon to take place.
As crazy as it sounds having space and time for high quality thinking can be one of the key ingredients to grow a business and Coaching can support such strategies to be but in place. A Business Coach can save you years of headaches, by assembling ideas, plans and presenting regimes to solve problems in a short space of time. Arguably, when fully applied and paid attention to this can bring resounding results and growth to your business.
Business Coaching has principles, frameworks and methodologies. These can be simultaneously applied for the purposes of sustainability, forward thinking and legacy growth planning. It is vital that the Coachee understands the application of these components as can be replicated in the future to promote exponential value and growth.
There are various components that need to be considered for coaching to have a lasting impact and achieve sustainable results. Some components that stand out for me are commitment and time keeping. It is imperative for both Coach and Coachee to set their ground rules as well as complete a contractual agreement which usually is drawn by the Coach. By doing so this collaborative relationship can function with mutual respect and integrity and both knowing what role they play.
With the rapid spread of COVID 19 and some restrictions in place. Coaching must take place in a safe environment, also where privacy can be maintained. E-Coaching has been growing rapidly, seeing an influx of virtual platforms being utilised. However, we are able to facilitate face to face meetings where necessary.
